"ALANM puts the learning in the hands and minds of the student. From the critical thinking strategies to the student-focused learning, the series had everything we needed. The ALANM project is the rare gem that excites us for the future of our field."

Adult Numeracy Documents and Videos
Steve led a training for Kentucky adult numeracy teachers where he demonstrated and discussed a series of lessons on functions. These video segments captured by Kentucky Educational Television are focused on broad math teaching practices, and they are appropriate for adult numeracy teachers at all levels.
To get the most out of the videos, it is strongly recommended that practitioners read the background essay that accompanies each video.
"Teaching with Questions"
In this short pedagogical video, Steve describes and demonstrates some of the teacher-student, student-student communication strategies that were an important part of his work building an adult numeracy project at The City University of New York that is now known as CUNY Start.
Adult Mathematics Documents and Videos
This 2009 paper by Steve Hinds is a descriptive account of a college transition math project begun at The City University of New York (CUNY) that has blossomed into a successful alternative developmental mathematics program serving thousands of students each year, now known as CUNY Start. The paper describes the characteristics of typical remedial math teaching and contrasts this with the very different approach to pedagogy, curriculum, and teacher induction in the reform project.
This 2011 paper by Steve Hinds focused on a more mature stage of the work outlined in "More Than Rules". Much of the focus of this paper is on the many teaching, advisement, and other program components that must be transformed (and not just "reshuffled") in order to shift teachers away from traditional, teacher-centered pedagogy, and to make dramatic gains in student success.

Math faculty members from the New York City College of Technology and Borough of Manhattan Community College work through a student-centered activity on "special" right triangles. Steve led this faculty development session as a part of ALANM work in support of active learning approaches to Gateway Algebra.
